The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed. – Albert Einstein

  1. The article was about jobs in the field of forensic science. There are people who scope out the scene, do DNA testing, identify how the body died, or who the body is. I thought it was interesting how just by bones it is possible to infer someone’s age, gender, and height. I also thought it was interesting how with just a few cells, it was possible to use polymerase to replicate the DNA millions of times to discover who it belonged to.

  2. I just finished reading the Article and all I can say is wow. That was not only interesting, but also really cool. The article definitely made me think about forensics and the crime scene investigation world. I also thought the Anthropology side of it was beyond cool, reminded me of that T.V. show Bones. My favorite part had to be about the body farm down in tennessee, its awesome to know that people do so much in the name of science to assist people with crime solving. I will definitely think about forensics for the future, and will most likely take a class on forensics and most definitely one in anthropology in the future.

  3. I have always been entertained by forensic science and the investigations that go into it. This article reminded me a lot about my new obsession with the ID channel (Investigation Discovery, I recommend it). On the ID channel, cold cases which are unsolved murder cases, are investigated after years of unknown answers. In order to find out about the mystery killer DNA testing is arranged on any evidence they can find (back then DNA testing was not around or was not as advanced as today). This shows how “DNA analysis has become one of the greatest forensic tools for identifying crime”, because it helps with identifying potential murders. I also agree with Emmett that the Body Farm in Tennessee is one of the most interesting facts in the article. I never knew experiments were conducted on dead bodies to reveal more information on body decomposition. I also never realized that setting, weather, season, etc. all play a big role with the way a body decomposes too. Overall I thought this was a very interesting article and made me want to think about forensics when I go to college.

    1. I have to agree with Casey how interesting this article was. When reading this article I became more intrigued and I did not realize how complex each individual job was. In the article it talks about how forensic scientist depend on their work as well as the work of forensic anthropologists. I thought this to be really cool as how each job in forensics is connected and contributes evidence to solving crimes. When reading this article I thought back to the murder shows that I watch to such as Law and Order, NCIS and Criminal Minds. These shows did not do the forensic field justice as the shows do not go as in depth as the article did. I can not see myself doing this in the future but it was really interesting to read and learn more about.

  4. This article was about the working environment of forensic science and it goes into depth of what it's actually about. It states that people often spend months or even years on one investigation. They even have to get to the scene quickly if it takes place outdoors because weather could erase the evidence; in the crime shows I watch they don't have to worry about it, so I thought that was interesting. I was impressed with how closely the forensic scientists investigate because in the article it says that they spend hours investigating one part of the room of the area where the crime took placeOne of the details mentioned that surprised me was the usage if a polymerase to identify the DNA of a victim or its killer. This article made me interested and persuade me into possibly becoming a forensic scientist.

    1. I agree with Rachel because the fact that they can determine what happened on a crime scene by looking so closely investigating the smallest things is so amazing. I really want to be a forensic scientist too and I can't wait for college for this.

    2. I agree with Rachel that it's really interesting to see how they will spend hours or days just looking at one room to find evidence. I've always watched crime shows and it has always made me interested in becoming a crime scene investigator. However after reading this article it pushed me more to consider studying this in college. It's not only a cool job that changes everyday based on the task, but you'e also helping to find answers and help people out.

  5. This very interesting article was about forensic science and what it is all about. I had a general sense of what it was based on the television shows I have seen such as Criminal minds and CSI, but I never knew the specific things that these scientists do. It was surprising to see that people could find a murder victim's killer, by looking at their bones, or using polymerase to find DNA. I never knew any of this before the article. I also assumed it did not take a long time, but in reality, it does. Although I think that forensic science is interesting, I do not believe that I would want to become a forensic scientist in the future. The only reason why I would not do this is because dead bodies, and murder freaks me out. These people probably see and have to deal with disgusting and terrible things. I do not think that I could handle it. Kudos to all of the forensic scientists out there!

  6. After reading this article I have to agree with Emmett Wilkerson, that this field sounds amazing and appealing. Prior to this my knowledge on this field was limited to Law and Order and the game Clue. It is fascinating how such a small percentage of DNA is enough to find a suspect, there's more evidence than meets the eye. It's obvious that this field requires not only a keen knowledge of biology nut a strong stomach when it comes to dealing with dead bodies. I have considered taking bio in college and perhaps will one day get a feel for this practice.

    1. I agree with Gareth because I also feel like this is and interesting career to have this got me interested in trying to pursue a career in this type of science. Even though science is not one of my best things, I would still want to try when I got to college so that I am able to have my options open.

  8. This article has been one of the most interesting articles I have read in a while! This is exactly what I have been wanting to do for years and when I go to college this is exactly what I want to do. It is so cool how people find what happened on a crime scene not only by fingerprints, bullet holes, but also in the lab with DNA. This is so cool and I seriously am so interested by this article.

  9. I could really see myself taking up a career in this field out of college. The article was very interesting and talked about really cool things the fact about a body decomposing faster in the summer because of heat and bugs but in the winter it would take a much longer time to decompose because of how cold it is. I would love to pursue a career in forensic science because it's very hands on and takes a lot of problem solving and analyzing evidence to get the information that's possibly needed to solve problems. I really enjoyed the article and the specifics that this article talked about and how much detail that was put in it as well.

  10. I find that the article about crime investigation using forensic science is really cool. I love watching shows like CSI and Law and Order, seeing those shows make every case feels to realistic! It is interesting that just DNA can see how a person died. The bones help to see when the person died. It was also interesting to see how there were such places like Body Farms. Body Farms had bodies that were left to decompose, buried in shallow ground or even under concrete. I find it weird and gruesome but I guess that's the best part of the job. As Ashley said, this would be a cool career to persue and it's would awesome to see a real life dead body. Forensics seems like a a lot of hard work but rewarding in the end.

  11. This job is interesting because you can see how both biology and chemistry interact to solve a crime. Not only would they have to examine the remains and crime scene but for more specific details the scientist would have to use a lab with many chemicals to find out more. I also agree with everybody that this job is interesting because it is always changing and they work on new cases almost everyday.

  12. This article is about how forensic experts work on a day to day basis and the challenges they have to face in relation to tv cop series. One thing that I found interesting was how long a body will go in the winter without decomposing compared to the summer. Also the fact that a lot of cases result in bodies not being found for a while could be proven to be good or bad based on the season the person was killed in. The time experts spend taking samples off of all pieces of evidence and then having to test each one multiple times to make sure it is the right person will go a long way. The last thing that shocked me was the farm which hides their own bodies to see how long it takes to decompose. In the end this article is very interesting and shows how cases are not easily solved without forensic experts hard work.

  14. This article about forensic science is very interesting and explains how much work and time is needed for information to be found. I am surprised that different crime shows use altered versions of techniques that real forensic scientists use. Television and the media make this work seem very quick and reliable but this source shows that time is very important when looking for evidence. If too much time has past, potential evidence can be washed away. Also that just one piece of DNA does not confirm much.

  15. I like watching CSI and Law and Order as much as the next person, but this article actually reveals the reality to this job. Though many have said they would love to pursue this as a career, I on the other hand wouldn't because it seems extremely stressful. The idea that DNA is the foundation to solving these crimes is both frightening and very cool. Overall, these scientists deserve a pat on the back because I wouldn't have the patience to do a job like this.

  16. I found it cool on what goes on during a crime scene. I'm used to seeing my parents watch csi shows and other shows that use forensic science. I found it interesting how they used forensic science for investigation on crime scenes. Now I am more interested in learning about forensic science and what goes on behind the scenes of a crime scene.
