The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed. – Albert Einstein

ARR # 2 Period 2

View the BBC video on blood doping and then read the article on Lance Armstrong. In the space below, leave a comment. BE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT BLOOD DOPING IS! You should react to the article AS WELL AS your classmates' comments. Feel free to pose questions that will invigorate the conversation. To get you started, think about the following question: Do you feel that blood doping should be illegal? What are the ethical issues surrounding blood doping whether it be autologous or homologous?

  1. Blood doping is when an individual adds new blood, drawn previously from them or someone else previously, into their bloodstream in order to increase the amount of oxygen in their blood. This is done to increase a person's endurance because there is more blood to deliver oxygen and take away the cells' wastes.
Doping should not be illegal because musicians lip sync and models get plastic surgery. Although it is unfair to other competitors, there are ways to have an edge in every competition, which doping provides. Doping, lip syncing, and surgery all alter the natural talent a person has, which I think is wrong to do, but it unfair to discredit one cheat without doing all.

    1. Going off of what Madisyn said, blood doping can work in two ways, blood from someone else can be transferred to a different someone (homologous) or blood from oneself can be stored then retransferred back to oneself once needed (autologous). Blood doping is used because it increases endurance because the amount of red blood cells is also increasing; therefore more oxygen is being traveled throughout the body.
However, I do disagree with Madisyn, blood doping should be illegal. She brought up a great point about how musicians lip sync and models get plastic surgery, therefore blood doping should be accepted too. Just because everyone does it, does not mean it is right. I also think blood doping is very risky. What happens when an inexperienced person transfers their blood to someone else and that person gets an infection? A disease or infection could be passed to a person just because they wanted to outdo their competitors. Is it really necessary to take these risks?

    2. I have to agree with Casey that blood doping should be illegal because there are so many risks involved like infections and severe health conditions. Also I believe that this is a form of cheating because for example Lance Armstrong won seven consecutive Tour de France's while he was in the process of using the method of blood doping. It creates an unfair advantage to other competitors. Blood doping is not something that should be encouraged and should not be practiced by athletes.

    3. I also would have to disagree with Madisyn and agree with Casey because injecting other people's blood or re injecting your own blood is completely different from getting plastic surgery. Not that there aren't side affects or complications but this is so much worse! You can risk your life by doing this where cardiovascular issues can develop as well as problems with circulation. Blood doping should be illegal because it is not necessary in order to grow muscle and at the same time can be risking your health.

  3. I think this is so strange how people can take out their blood and store it and then re inject it when they are about to exercise. I understand that it raises the red blood cell count that increases the oxygen level that is delivered to muscles which can improve recovery and endurance, but that is so strange. I think this should be illegal because it sounds really unsafe and dangerous to draw your own blood and re inject it. Injecting someone else's blood into yours is even worse and that should be illegal. Autologous shouldn't be done, but homologous is just really over the top. This can lead to serious complications and therefore should not be done.

  4. In addition to what Isabelle and Casey said, I do have to agree that blood doping should be illegal. There are so many risk along with transferring blood, especially if you don't know exactly what you're doing. In response to Madisyn, it is considered a way of cheating, but it's a medical issue and can dangerously effect somebody.

  5. Blood doping in my eyes is a very serious thing that should be taken much more serious to ensure that people are keeping themselves healthy, but also ensuring that these athletes are not cheating either. It seems very bizarre to me that a person would wanna take another persons and inject it in themselves to give them a better performance rate and also storing their own blood to enhance themselves before a race or even a game. I feel that this is a very unethical way and this problem needs to be solved and stopped completely and entirely. If you look at how unfair it is that these athletes are doing this is not fair to the athletes who are actually trying to with fair and square.

  7. As everyone has mentioned, blood doping can be very dangerous and have serious life consequences. The process of blood doping which is transferring blood in and out the body through injections. In the article, Lance Armstrong admitted to blood doping and taking drug enhanced testosterone. It was interesting to see why athletes and people who enjoy playing sports would do internal harm to the body. Blood doping is not something to be taken lightly and with serious reparations, it can be illegal. Blood doping is not healthy not is it beneficial for natural development.

  8. I agree that blood doping should be illegal because it is used as an enhancement for athletes which is cheating. Lance Armstrong and many more athletes all over the world have been using this method and have been rightfully stripped of their athletic titles. People also have to consider the dangers of blood doping and infections and diseases that can be caused by this. Even though it improves one's endurance by providing more oxygen to the body, blood doping could potentially be very dangerous to one's body.

  9. Blood doping is a very serious matter. I can see why the Olympics banned it, seeing as how it can be extremely dangerous and it is completely unfair. I understand that it is used to enhance a persons endurance, making them last longer and move faster, but the consequences are too high of a price. I agree with Casey when she commented on how a person doing a homologous doping could get an infection and/or disease from another persons blood. I think that blood doping should be illegal as well. Even though it barely seems harmless to some people, it is an unfair advantage. Some people train hard for what they are doing whereas others take a sort of easy way out by injecting their blood or the blood of another person into their bloodstream in order to increase their adrenaline. Is being able to win or get ahead really worth the price of illness caused my blood doping?

  10. Blood doping is when someone takes someone else's blood and injects it into themselves. It is done in order to increase the number of red blood cells in ones's body. However, it can be very dangerous since it can lead to infections. It has also been banned from the Olympics since the 1990s since the use of this method was considered cheating. I am not sure why people would do this if it could lead to health risks because the way it was explained it didn't seem like it was very useful. However, why is it that some people go to such extreme measures of blood doping even if they might be aware of the risks?

  11. Blood doping is basically a way to increase the number of red blood cells in your body in order to gain more energy and a longer endurance period. if you're using your own blood i think that should be allowed because it is your own blood and it would still be in your body even if you hand't taken it out. However if it's someone else's blood that shouldn't be allowed. it;s not fair, it's basically like using steroids to enhance your performance. Also, it's dangerous and an athlete shouldn't put their life at risk simply to get more energy.
