The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.– Albert Einstein

Can people die of a broken heart? Check this out! In the space below, leave a comment. You should react to the article AS WELL AS your classmates' comments. Feel free to pose questions that will invigorate the conversation.
It makes sense that a person can suffer from a broken heart. The loss of of a loved one can cause stress and depression, as stated in the article, which can lead to many other problems and could possibly cause death in the end. However, I do not think that a person can necessarily die from a broken heart alone. There are other reasons that a person could die but they would be a cause of a "broken heart".
I agree with Mark. Dying of a broken heart makes complete sense, especially if someone dies that you really love. In Dorothy Lee's case it wouldn't be that shocking or out of the ordinary. She was married to her husband for 40 years. No one knew him better than she did and to one day wake up and he's not next to her is a very sad thing to deal with. She has to live the rest of her life without her husband. Losing someone that close to you can cause depression which can leas to a lot of health problems in the future. I think it is sensible to lose someone so that you loved so much and then suffer from a broken heart because I can only imagine that she feels like she lost a piece of her too.
I agree with Dejia and Mark that people dying from a broken heart is possible because of depression. I think when people read the title of the article, they literally think a heart is broken. However, in this case, the woman died because she was so depressed about her husband's death. Her depression led to her death because it caused bad heath.
I also agree with Mark, going off of what was said that the spouses could end up experiencing depression after their lover dies. It said in the article about after a spouse dies, the other spouse starts to experience health problems. I honestly never thought this was true, I always thought it was made up because people get hurt in relationships and say "I have a broken heart". This makes the statement have to go in more depth if the relationship was for a longer amount of time. The cause of the broken heart could have been because of depression.
I agree with all of the people above because a broken heart is not something you can go to the pharmacy and get a medicine for. Sometimes the only medicine for a broken heart is time and not everybody has time to just throw away. A broken heart is something that can have long lasting effects on a person that can not always be visible on the outside. A broken heart can lead to depression or even physical consequences such as something as serious as suicide. A broken heart can be a lot more serious depending on the person and the situation.
i agree with talbot when he mentioned that a broken heart can especially be dangerous because there is no medicine for it. A broken heart can be a lot more serious than how they are perceived by people who have not had one before. Not that i have had one but after reading the article and knowing people that have gone through them, i further understand the severity of them. Broken hearts do not just go away over night. They take time and being around the right people to truly get over them. they also depend on what the broken heart came from. They can appear from the loss of a loved one or anything else that may upset someone to that magnitude.
Someone can suffer from a broken heart like Mark said a loss of a loved one can cause depression, but Andrew says you can't go to the hospital, or the pharmacy and get a over the counter medicine to relieve it. Also depression would most likely be the reason someone feels that they have a broken heart. The reason for that is because like Dejia said, the husband was with her for 40 years, and when two people are together for that long, they have a peace missing, because she did not know what to do.
