The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed. – Albert Einstein

ARR# 4 - Period 4

Below are some links on some conditions that people have asked about in class. Read one (or all if you want!) and then in the space below, leave a comment. You should react to the article AS WELL AS your classmates' comments. Feel free to pose questions that will invigorate the conversation.

  1. The article I read was about the kidney stones, and I thought it was interesting because it described how and why people get them. When reading the ways to avoid kidney stones, it seems like it's easy not to get them. All you have to do is stay healthy, but living in an average American society, there are so many unhealthy foods that it seems inevitable that kidney stones will happen at least once. I thought it was also interesting how the article said how mostly men get kidney stones. Overall the article was really informative about gives awareness to how serious kidney stones are.

  2. A moment ago I read the article that talked about the girl who needed to get her appendix removed. The appendix serves no clear function in our body and is known as a vestiges structure. Other parts of the body, like tonsils, wisdom teeth, body hair, etc. are also examples of vestiges structures. I find it very interesting that people are born with body parts that are not needed for survival, and serve no purpose in our lives. In fact, these body parts get in the way of things, if anything, as they can get infected, or grow incorrectly, like my wisdom teeth did. This article was very interesting and it talked about scientists who studied the appendix just off of sheer interest, or out of curiosity, and their finding or guesses of why these body parts may be there.

  3. I also read the article on the kidney stones. I was interested in this article because my father once had kidney stones. He picked me up from school one day and brought me with him to the emergency room. The doctors told him that he was dehydrated because he never drank water and then they hooked him up to an IV and I don't remember much but i'm pretty sure he had to urinate the crystals out. I learned that the pain doesn't necessarily come from peeing out the crystals. It actually comes from the back up of urine, expanding the kidney and putting pressure on other parts of the body.

  4. I did my reading on how kidney stones are formed because it was always a topic that I have wondered about. I never knew that so many people suffered from kidney stones, and that more men suffer than women. When I was younger my father always would say that if I ate too much salt it would get stuck in my kidneys. Obviously he said this so I would stop pouring salt on my french fries, but that is what i always thought a kidney stone was, a big grain of salt. When I read that it is actually a chemical that hardens, and that they can be so painful that you want to jump out of your skin i could not believe it. I was baffled when I read that the pain was actually urine back up, I never thought a liquid like urine could hurt the body in such a way. Also that being dehydrated causes kidney stones, I never thought that not drinking enough water could cause something more than just having someone pass out. All and all i thought the article was very interesting and I will be drinking lots of water from now on.

  5. I read the article on kidney stones, and like Kasey I found it interesting how more men suffer than women and how severe the pain seems to be from kidney stones. I also found it interesting how Caucasians are at the highest risk, and once a man has had a kidney stone, his chances of getting another one increase. However, certain diets can help prevent kidney stones, so it seems like if one leads a healthy life, then their chances of getting a kidney stone decrease, and they won't have to worry too much.

  6. I also read about the Kidney stones. One of the major things I found interesting was the fact that that young men could possibly get kidney stones. Most of the time when I hear about things like this I just assume older men usually get this. I also found the pain really interesting too because u wouldn't think something that small would cause great pain. A question i had for anyone is how would the stone be removed if it was too big? Also, what do you guys think about the fact that most people don't change their habits?

  7. After reading the article about what the purpose of the appendix is, I realized how useless the appendix is. It is a waste of space because the organ is filled with what we believe is poison. If this “poison comes in contact with any part of our body, our lives are at risk. When your appendix explodes, it is one of the worst pains and you can hardly walk. I believe we should not have appendixes because they are useless organs and are a waste of money towards medical insurance.
