The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.– Albert Einstein

ARR# 5 - Period 2
What happens in spinal cord injury? Find out here. In the space below, leave a comment. You should react to the article AS WELL AS your classmates' comments. Feel free to pose questions that will invigorate the conversation.
This was interesting and uncomfortable, I could not stop fidgeting while reading it, and my back felt weird while reading the specific parts about how paralysis occurs. Other than that, I found it amazing that a spinal cord injury could lead to so many other problems with the other systems of your body. I thought that victims' only problem was losing all feeling in their limbs, but I never thought that there would be major problems with breathing, your blood, and disposing waste. With all of these, losing all feeling of your limbs seems like the least of your worries.
I completely agree with Mark. Though it was very interesting to learn about it was also very scary to learn about at the same time. The thought of paralysis is a very scary thing, and reading about paralysis did not make it seem any less scary. After talking about this in class and reading about it I was shocked by the total damage paralysis does to the body and how it affects other systems in the body other than just the nervous system. Learning in class that George Reeve's death was because his lungs stopped working is crazy to think about because the nervous system affected an entirely different system in the body and ended up killing a person. Paralysis is a whole lot more complex than I ever thought it was before.
i agree with both mark and andrew in the fact that as interesting as it was to learn about how the spinal cord works it was also scary to see just how serious an injury could be. im in the same boat as mark because i always thought it just meant not being able to move some of your limbs but now i can see that it can be as serious as causing trouble when removing waste, moving blood and especially having a difficult time breathing. To me a spinal cord injury could be one of the most dangerous injuries because of how seriously it could not give you paralysis, but for how much it could damage the rest of your systems.
I agree with Mark, Andrew Sheehan, and Andrew Talbot by learning about the spinal cord and how it functions. Also the way when I was reading the article, it made me think of how painful it would be to have a broken spinal cord. It can be very dangerous by having paralysis because that can cause problems with the neurons getting sent from your brain to where it hurts. The spinal cord also helps to send the neurons to where they need to go and let the brain send it's senses to where there is pain. The cause of the breaking of the spinal cord can be very serious because people are not able to control their bodies on their own. Some people have to live on breathing with oxygen. Others can break their spinal cord in their neck and be paralyzed down to their feet and that is a serious problem. Neurons are not able to get to where they need to when someone hurts themselves. Paralysis is a serious matter and just thinking about it pains my back.
I agree with everyone. I think that this issue can be very serious because it makes it difficult for people to breath which is obviously a necessity humans need in order to live. What I also found shocking was that there was an estimate of 10,000 to 12,000 spine injuries every year in the United States. It's shocking because I really don't think of people breaking their spine because it's usually an arm, hand, etc that people mostly break. However, it just shows that we have to be more careful with our bodies because I never new something so simple as the spine would cause so much damage to the body if it was broken or injured.
I agree with everyone that is saying that they realized the full severity of a spinal cord injury. it is not just becoming paralyzed from that part of the spinal cord down, as if that was not bad enough, but could have complexities breathing, a rough blood flow or a difficult time removing waste. A spinal cord injury of this severity is uncommon but then again not unheard of. This can happen to anyone at any given time and that truly scares me. This just proves how all the different systems of our bodies are connected in more ways then we can imagine and we have to do whatever we can to keep them safe.
Reading the article we are all now very aware of the fact that if you damage your spinal cord there is a high risk of any sort of injury. This injury can range from being paralyzed to just a X-ray check and surgery being done. Knowing this about injuring your spinal cord, the cost doctors put into trying to manage the care is about 4 billion a year. This number is awful high and shows the seriousness of this injury. The injury also affects breathing as stated in the article and if you are not able to breathe how would you be able to even survive because breathing is honestly the most vital part for living.
I felt the same way Mark did when I read this. This actually made me cringe. The spinal cord is actually a very important part of the body. Thinking about my spinal cord actually being injured is a very uncomfortable thought. I did not realize that it was so severe. I thought that it was like a broken arm and that it just took time to heal.
