The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed. – Albert Einstein

ARR # 4 Period 3

Below are some links on some conditions that people have asked about in class. Read one (or all if you want!) and then in the space below, leave a comment. You should react to the article AS WELL AS your classmates' comments. Feel free to pose questions that will invigorate the conversation.

  1. I just read the article on kidney stones, and it seems painful. To be honest, they seem like they hurt more than cramps. I would hate to ever have them and I feel bad for the people who will/ have experienced them. This article gave insight to me on what I can tell the rest of my family. All they eat is spanish food and clearly they can get them as well. Maybe they'll see the risk.

  3. I read the article about kidney stones. It is crazy that one million Americans are treated for kidney stones. It sounds very painful. It is sad that men who have them once have a good chance of getting them again. This article gave me further insight as to how important a healthy diet truly is because dehydration and diet are some of the causes of kidney stones. I agree with Shakeith because it is important to pass this information on and possibly convince people to eat better.

  4. I watched the video on Diverticulosis *WARNING* video of the inside of male's colon and it reminded me of tonsillitis. Now, diverticulosis are little divets/hole-like shapes in the colon and it could lead to diverticulitis and infection can happen there, but if it doesn't get too bad you may not even know you have it! Tonsillitis is sort of like that, but1) you now you have it b/c you can SEE it and 2) with tonsillitis it's inflammation of the tonsils and can become really bad like diverticulosis and bacteria can get into the hole-like shapes can cause gross smelling tonsillitis stones made of bacteria and I think mucous. This is where I'm not sure the two are the same, but from my understanding if both these conditions get too out of control, it could be dangerous.

  5. The article about kidney stones is very scary. The chances of getting a kidney stone is so high and as you get older you're more likely to get one. It is crazy that so many people get kidney stones. One of my best friends was in the hospital three times last year due to kidney stones. My dad has also gotten one. I cannot imagine how horrible and intense the pain is. I agree with Chloe about how this article provided me with more information about how important it is to maintain a healthy diet. I also agree with Shakeith. I plan on telling my dad and my friend about how they can reduce their risks of getting another kidney stone.

  6. I read the article about the appendix and other "unecessary" organs because I know so many people who have either gotten their appendix removed, or other vestigial structures. One of my old science teachers had his gallbladder removed after it has burst. I think it is so fascinating how certain organs can be taken out and we can still live without them. The human body seems to perfect to be missing something! I think the most interesting fact in the article is that historians and scientists look at vestigial structures such as wisdom teeth to assess how they were used in the past.
While the appendix can house beneficial bacteria, the fact that it can get severely infected is pretty scary. Hopefull I'll never have to deal with getting my appendix removed like the people I know who had it removed. Kendall Joseph Ferrara, I think you've taught her Ms.Leavitt, told me about her appendix removal story, and it did not sound fun.

  7. After reading all 3 articles by accident I realized how high the risk of having kidney stones is. I think this is due to the fact that eating lots of meat and fish and not being fully hydrated can contribute to kidney stones because many people include that into their diet. The appendix is fascinating because historians and scientists say that our ancestors needed it to survive millions of years ago but many people still need it today which shows how impoverished parts of the world still are. Having my appendix removed sounds painful but i'd rather have it removed than live in an area where I need it for survival. I agree with Shakeith that these health issues should be spread to everyone to lower the risks.

  8. I agree with Declan, I have not realized how easy it is to get a kidney stone. I really have not been informed about kidney stones before. I cant not imagine the horrific pain that people with kidney stones go through. I will go home today and drink a tall hefty glass of water to make sure i can prevent these stones from ever hurting me. It also scares me that male Caucasians are more at risk.

  9. I also read the "What is the Appendix Good For?" article. I've heard about people who have gotten their appendix taken out and I agree with Shane, it does not seem like a painless procedure. However, it seems vital for people who live in undeveloped countries. The article states that having a place in your body where "good" bacteria resides is very important especially for children. For people who live under sanitary conditions, getting the appendix taken out seems like a good idea because it prevents one from experiencing it burst. However, it is necessary for people in undeveloped countries because it keeps good bacteria in the body preventing the person from getting sick.

  10. I read the second article on how kidney stones are formed and how they are treated. That sounds like such a scary condition to have! Everyone seems to be on the same page with me regarding the many, many ways that one can get a kidney stone. It must be really important to have a generally healthy diet with lots of fluids so that urine can successfully pass. It is quite alarming that kidney stones are so common, but it surprised me that they are mostly found in men. I wonder if it has something to do with specific genes that code for these small, yet painful, stones. Also, the"crystal" formation of these stones sounded a bit odd to me....I hope to never experience a major kidney stone that could do harm to my body's systems.

  11. This is so scary!!!!!!! I read in the article that doctors are not exactly sure why this happens and many doctors think its because of low diet. Now thinking about how just having a low diet can affect someones life forever! Like Hannah said I hope I would never have to experience anything like this or anything that involves my kidneys

  13. Like Tatyana I read the article and saw the video about Diverticulitis. First off what I need to say is that Diverticulitis is DISGUSTING!!! I mean how is it possible for someone to only feel partial pain when there are actual holes and pouches inside of your colon?!?! These symptoms are so slight sometimes that people barely notice them I mean COME ON!! THEY ARE HOLES IN YOUR COLON!! However I did like learning about the cures which seemed very simple like Use a heating pad, set on low, on your belly or just Relaxing. For example, trying meditation or slow, deep breathing in a quiet room or just fixing your diet, drink water, exercise regularly and swallowing a tylenol to help with the cramps that might come with it. So i would still be terrified to get it but it wouldn't be too expensive to get rid of it as long as I caught it in time.

  14. I enjoyed learning about how kidney stones form and before I actually knew what it really was I wondered if it related to gallstones even though they are placed in two different organs. However I do find it fascinating how UTIs cause kidney stones and I find that it is possible for both men and women to have a UTI.I find it painful of the procedure of a uterereoscopy
