The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed. – Albert Einstein

ARR # 4 Period 2

Below are some links on some conditions that people have asked about in class. Read one (or all if you want!) and then in the space below, leave a comment. You should react to the article AS WELL AS your classmates' comments. Feel free to pose questions that will invigorate the conversation.

  2. I chose the article about kidney stones to read. I found the most interesting part of the article was the fact that the extreme pain is not from the stone itself but the fact that it blocks the urine flow. Ever since I have heard about kidney stones I always thought that because of the size of the stone and the size of the ureter, that the pain of actually passing the stone was the most painful part. I also did not realize how common kidney stones are and that one in seven men will have them at some point of their life. After reading this article I am now going to make sure to drink lots of water to prevent kidney stones from ever happening to me.

  3. it's interesting to see that many people think that we dont need our appendix, however we actually do. The function of the appendix depends on where you live. What specialist have learned from studying the appendix is that it helps good bacteria grow. If bad bacteria attack then good bacteria from the appendix come out to "fight" off the bad bacteria. It's interesting to see that this space for good bacteria is useful in parts of the world that are poor and undeveloped. It is also weird to learn that most people in developed countries like the United States are the ones to get infected appendixes.

    1. I also agree with Erika on the fact that I never believed the appendix was an important organ. However after reading the article I have realized that the appendix is useful in ways such as it produces good bacteria for the body. Appendixes have never been an organ that is frequently talked about, which I believed to be a reason to why it was not necessary. Based on the article the appendix is an organ that can be useful to the body.

  4. I agree with Erika. I have never really believed that there was a need for our appendix. It was hardly ever talked about and many people did not know what its function was. However, after reading this article I have found out that the appendix can be a very useful and very important organ. I also agree with Erika because I also found it very weird that people in developed countries are the ones getting infected appendixes. It's also weird to think how for so long people did not think the appendix was very important.

  5. When I was younger, I was always told that the appendix was a non-functioning organ; but after reading the article about the true function of the appendix, it made me really surprised. The true function of the appendix is that it harbors bacteria so that the bacteria doesn't travel throughout the body, which wouldn't be good. That is why appendicitis is so crucial to the body and the appendix must be removed as soon as possible. The appendix would stop functioning and the bacteria would begin come out and would effect the other important organs of the body, such as the digestive system. It's interesting to know that other countries like the US seem to have a lot cases of appendicitis like the US. After reading this article, I came to realize that the appendix actually prevents infections of the other organs and if it gets infected, it would need to be removed before the bacteria starts to spread throughout the body.

  6. I agree with Erika and Lindsey on the fact that for most of my life I didn't think there was an actual function of the appendix but with all the science out today its now seen that the appendix could be useful in our lives. I feel that with all the new ideas on if the appendix could be a helpful organ shows just how much science has come along the way. Also it shows us that in a sense that a organ that all along was seen as having no imminent functions could possibly the key to a medical phenomenon answered.

  7. When I was younger I never really cared to learn about the appendix until I needed to get surgery because my appendix got infected. After learning about it I learned that the appendix was not a necessary organ. But now studies are showing that the appendix is actually needed in your body depending on where people live or have lived. After reading the article I still have a strong feeling that the appendix is not a necessary organ due to personal experience but I also am thinking that it is somewhat necessary.

  8. I read the article on diverticulosis because I had never heard of it before. It occurs when in the colon develop pockets in its wall. Because waste travels through this area, these pockets could cause inflammation or infections. To treat this, doctors could suggest eating more fiber, having a liquid diet, or taking antibiotics. The scary part about this is that it could either go unnoticed until someone gets a colonoscopy, like in the video, or has extreme digestive pain.

  10. I found the article about the kidney stones as interesting yet disgusting. Kidney stones have a major impact on the excretory system. The Kidney stones are chemical deposits in the urine that form into hard crystals. This make the process of urinating less safe because it can lead to urinary infections. Hopefully in the near future I won't contract any urinary infections of have a kidney stone the size of a golf ball.
