The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed. – Albert Einstein

  1. I found this article to be really interesting. I have never known very much about spinal cord injuries but it was fun to learn. I was surprised to find out how early people started to realize that they could treat certain spinal injuries. Over time doctors have learned more and more about the spinal cord. I also found it interesting how there can still be so many possible problems after surviving a spinal cord injury. It can cause problems with your bladder and bowel movements and also with your reproductive function. This article really scared me because the effects of a spinal cord injury can be very serious.

    1. I agree with Lindsey that the fact that spinal injuries can affect reproductive functions is interesting. I had no idea that a spinal injury could affect bladder and bowel movements. I also thought it was very surprising that 80% of patients that have spinal injuries are men; I figured men would have a higher percentage but I did not expect it to be that large of a percent. I also believe that the amount of people who do have spinal injuries could be prevented, as listed out in the article the most common ways to get a spinal injury is from car accidents and violence. Wearing seat belts or making sure violence doesn't break out (guns and knives) could save your life. I also thought it was crazy to me that in 460 B.C. Greek physicians used the Hippocratic Ladder which was a device “that required the patient to be bound, tied to the rungs upside-down, and shaken vigorously”, it’s amazing how much we approved medically over centuries.

    2. I agree with Casey and Lindsey on how the spinal cord impacts the reproductive system is interesting. The fact that our knowledge has become so advanced is incredible that we are able to know certain treatments that can help fix or improve the spinal cord. Doctors are becoming more and more advanced in their techniques which will help their patients be more comfortable.

  2. This article was very interesting because like Lindsey said i never knew much about spinal injuries and how they are fixed. Spinal cord injuries are very serious and most of them long lasting damage, which is very shocking because you would think anything can be fixed when it comes to today's technology, and all the things our society deals with. This was a shocking reading because of all the background facts and ideas from the past, history like Casey had stated.

  4. I learned a lot from this article. I learned that when you are thrown through the windshield of a car or off a horse it causes the vertebrae in the neck to crush and compress which can cause irreversible damage. Also taking a gunshot or knife to the spinal cord can cause life long disabilities. Its good to know that doctors are doing their best to find a way to cure all spinal cored injuries. It's scary to see that a lot of spinal cord injures can happen just through sports.

  5. This article was very interesting and I enjoyed reading about injuries that occur in the Spinal Cord. It is really cool to know that science that is used now is traced to centuries ago where they had different ideas and theories about what affects the brain and how people act. I learned that even though there are bones in the spine to protect the cord from being damages, it can still be fractured by any physical trauma. Due to these injuries, people can suffer from long-term disabilities which affect their bodies and their future. Not only does it affect a person mentally and physically, but it is also a lot of money to do research and find treatments in order to help these people. Spinal Cord injuries can be very dangerous since the person can lose all feeling and control over their body. It is important to protect ourselves and be careful because these injuries are sometimes inevitable and can be very dangerous.

    1. I agree with Lisnalda that the article is very important and as well as interesting about the spinal cord. The spinal cord is part of the nervous system that if it was damaged severely, the parts of body's function for senses disables. The spinal cord is amazing how it can be bone like and structural, this creates support for the back. People who injure their spinal cord can go through treatment like physical therapy and can even take medicine for it. The spinal cord can have long term effects when damaged. People should consider not doing extreme body contact sports or activities, they can not only cause trauma to the spinal cord and can effect the brain from functioning; since they are connected. The spinal cord plays a major role in human mobility and bodily sensory.

  6. The brain and spinal cord are parts of the control center for the nervous system. Electrical signals are sent through or to the spine in order to cause movement or sense our surroundings. It is extremely dangerous to have swelling or pressure in the spinal cord because this could cut off blood flow. With blood flow cut off, certain areas could build up with cellular waste and not get oxygen in time. After reading the article I began to wonder, do paralyzed people still get any sensation or feelings in the affected areas?

  7. This article has taught me a lot about spinal cord injuries. I never knew how serious they could be until I read this. It is quiet scary to believe that a serious enough injury to your spinal cord could effect your entire life forever. The most interesting thing about this article was the kind of treatments people had before modern times. This shows how far medical advancements and treatments have come and they can continue to advance until there is a treatment which can heal a serious spinal cord injury.

  8. I found this article quite interesting. It was also quite shocking how in ancient times, many Greeks and Egyptians knew how to treat spinal cord injuries. The statistics of this life changing injury is surprising, as well; with 10,000-12,000 victims per year and most of them are caused by car accidents and how it happens to most people between the ages of 16-30. Before I read this article I didn't know that so many young people were mostly affected and what causes these injuries to happen. Also I was very interested about the different methods doctors and specialists use today to treat spinal cord injuries, I always thought that they couldn't be helped since the person would be in paralysis for the rest of their life. I definitely recommend this article to someone who is interested in knowing more about spinal cord injuries and how to treat them.
