The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed. – Albert Einstein

  1. Reading this reminded me of something I had seen in the show Grey's Anatomy. A kid had gotten into a really bad accident and broke his back. In order to help him, they had to lay him on a hard board with his limbs a head in between cushions so he couldn't move and everyday the doctors had to turn a wheel to help pull his spine back into place. I would never had thought that something so simple came from the ancient times. I know that we get a lot of our answers/ science/ evidence from ancient times, but I never thought this could come from that time period. I thought that with more serious injuries, people just died. Others tried to help them but couldn't because they didn't have the resources.

  2. Just like Chloe i knew the spine was important and like Shakeith I was partially surprised on how early on in history people have been working on helping cure spinal injuries, but I didn't know that it had such a major effect on the body as a whole. For example, I didn't know that if the spine gets injured it can effect the actual immune health of a person and can cause pneumonia which can then lead to death! Although I do realize that a lot of the spasms and other problems like breathing properly and pain could be closely tied to the spinal cord because the brain is directly connected to the spine and allows for the sending out of signals to the rest of the body I wondered why even though the cord would be broken or injured, why would the blood be effected since it has many other possible places it could flow through?

  3. Similar to Chloe and Dhakiya, I always knew that protecting your spinal cord is very important. However, I did not know all of the things that can go wrong with your body if it is injured. Also, like Shakeith I was surprised that people have been studying the spinal cord for so long. It is very interesting that one part of the body can affect so many other parts of your body if it is injured. It is also really scary. I cannot believe that so many spinal cord injuries happen every year. Reading this definitely makes me nervous because it happens so often. But like Chloe said, hopefully doctors and scientist will be able to make advances in research so people can be treated.

  4. to agree with Chloe I think it is crazy how long scientists and doctors have been working on repairing spinal injuries and how long the medical field has come in the past 100 years or so. I always knew how serious a spinal injury is but this article cleared up the specific problems one would face. Bowel problems, fertility problems, and mobility are huge freedoms most people take for granted and to have them taken away is hard to fathom. This kind of restriction is best related to becoming an infant while being an adult because you are dependent on others for so many basic tasks. I was surprised that so many spinal injuries were related to violent encounters but was not surprised about car crashes and sports accidents. My dads friend became paralyzed during a sports game and I never realized how much pain he must go through on a daily basis.

  5. Spinal Cord Injuries seem very painful and overall seem to be a huge impediment on daily life for people affected. I agree with everyone above and am surprised at how early studies on the spinal cord started. At first, I was surprised at how young most of the victims were. The article said that 55% of victims were between the ages 16 and 30. After thinking about it, however, it made sense because during these ages people are most active and are involved in competitive sports, ect. It also shocked me when I read how having a spinal cord injury not only causes general pain, but blood clots, fertility problems, spasms and more.

  6. I find it kind of fascinating how medicine has evolved. From the Hindu and Arabs figuring out ways to correct spinal deformities to doctors in the 1900's realizing that they need to sterilize their tools before using it on other people. I think it's kind of scary how we go about our daily lives and things like spinal cord injuries could happen to anyone even young people like what Rosemarie said, most victims were between 16-30. And i can see this becuase of what Ms. Leavitt said about teens not having the part of their brain that says 'I COULD DIE if i do this' developed yet feeds in to them being more susceptible to a spinal cord injury.

  7. I agree with Tatyana. The amount of medical care that has been created based off of spinal cord injuries. However, I never realized all the possible outcomes of a spinal cord injury. I just knew that the spinal cord was important and it was needed for a person to survive. Also, the fact that 80% of spinal cord injuries occur to men scares me and makes me feel like i am more at risk being a male between the ages of 16 and 30.As we learned in class all the nerves interact with the brain through the spinal cord, so everyone can agree that there are many things at risk by hurting your spinal cord. Overall, I believe that it is necessary for someone to be aware of the possible outcomes. I will be sure to be more careful when it comes to doing dangerous things that can possibly hurt my spinal cord.

  8. After reading Pats response. I can just image how scared many men are in the world because 80% of spinal cord injuries happen to men. Of course there are many risk when participating in anything that can ruin someones nerves in their spinal cord. I feel bad for the people who have long term injuries.

  9. I find it interesting how 80% of men are most likely to get a spinal cord injury. Not only that the ages are to be found to only be 16-30. I just wonder besides car accidents and work accidents what could possibly happen between these ages that can't hap to a person who is 65 years old. In addition to having a spinal cord injury therapy and proper care for those patients round up to about 4 billion a year. Far as i know not eveyone is financially stable to afford this proper care.

  10. Similar to Azja, I think the demographic of those affected by spinal cord injuries is very interesting. With previous knowledge, I felt as if those who suffered from spinal cord injuries had no correlation but it seems as if they do. Personally, I think spinal cord injuries are the scariest form of injuries because of all the complications that come out of them (like the article mentioned). The most interesting information from the article was that it can cost up to $4 Billion dollars to live a life with a spinal cord injury. That is such a high number that it adds to the fear of spinal cord injuries. Hopefully one day modern medicine can help treat these injuries at a lower cost. There seems to be signs of future advances based on how the article said that many injuries can be effectively treated if they are brought to a specialist/doctor early enough.

  11. It is so frightening to me that one aggressive blow to the spinal cord could cause such serious damage. I agree with Azja that is is surprising that men are more prone to such injuries. However, it is important to take precautions no matter which gender you are. With the $4 billion that is being put into spinal cord injuries every year, it is crucial to ensure that you are not one of those patients. Although these injuries are most likely caused by accidents, it is really important to take care of yourself and get treatment if needed. Like Pat mentioned, it is scary that young people are at risk for these injuries more than adults. That being said, it would be helpful to look out for one another to prevent these possible disasters.
